Royalty Collector

Early-stage concept

This is still a very early-stage concept, but an idea we found interesting to share. This means that it hasn't been developed yet, nor thoroughly thought through.

Bear fruit

Whenever a secondary-sale is made on the open market a percentage of the price gets collected to give back to the creators. This percentage is an arbitrary amount we configure via the contract itself. We never really liked how high some projects set this amount, thus opted to go for a small cut (see Overview for the exact value). This royalty we collect is a passive income and whether it's a profitable one depends on how liquid the collection deems to be.

Share fruit

We're brainstorming about a potential revenue model, allowing those participating in the project to collect this royalty with us. Though, the needed calculations, analyses and plans have to be created to see whether it would be a beneficial source of income. Not that we're talking about pennies worth of revenue being accumulated on a monthly basis.

This would likely mean the following:

  • Not everyone should have an equal share, unless the volume is incredible.

  • A form of grind has to be made, gamifying the concept. For instance by being able to create some value for your NFT. ¹

  • Having a card's rarity play a role in the amount one is able to receive; giving extra value to these classes and a head-start to those with luck on their side.

  • Upgrade participants should be given more love, potentially linking this to the gamification of the process. For instance by creating points they can collect and trade for an instant cut of the royalties or for an increase of their royalty percentage to achieve a higher passive income. These points, being fungible, could become like the balance of the NFT. ¹ ²

  • Having to increase the overall royalty fee of the collection, so that we have more to give. Though, like we said, we do not like this in other projects and prefer not to go this route. So we'd only do this if we were certain that it would create a longer lasting and more profitable system for this endeavor.

¹ This would probably only work well when META64 is implemented.

² As this concept is closely-related to ERC6551, it also has the problem explained in the Security Considerations section of the EIP page for ERC6551. So we'd really have to think this through and see what works and what doesn't.

Only time will tell if this idea will come to fruition or not. We wanted to already address it and see how others - consumers and creators alike - react to it and potentially spark fruitful conversations in the space.
